Tangata Tiriti: Two Perspectives on the art & science of decolonisationThe ongoing colonial project has significantly disrupted the trajectory of Indigenous and non-Indigenous lives in this country and beyond. It is a complex story of disadvantage and privilege that impacts on all corners of our lives. Colonisation has always been resisted.
This session will draw on the experiences of Mershen Pillay (South African) and Heather Came (Pākehā) as they pursue decolonisation in their personal and professional lives. Mershen is an academic and a leader in the speech and language community. Heather is an activist scholar at large who asks too many questions.
The session will take the form of a fireside chat, supported by a slideshow, as we wrestle with kaupapa such as: What is decolonisation, and why is it important? Why is Te Tiriti o Waitangi such an important taonga for the health sector? What needs to be done? What is performative practice versus transformative practice? How to be an effective ally or change agent? How to deal with those committed to maintaining inequities?
