Why is it called 'Crab' Farm?
Established in the early 1980s, Crab Farm Winery released its first vintage in 1987. The Jardine family has owned the land for over 100 years—originally purchased sight unseen, only to discover it was partially underwater, earning its name from the tidal pools and abundant crabs.
The 1931 Napier earthquake raised the land by over two metres, making it ideal for vineyards. Hamish Jardine and his father, Jim, planted the first vines at the home block, later expanding to Pukera Vineyard in Puketitiri Valley and the Shingle Pit block in Esk Valley (2012).
With a hands-on approach and a commitment to crafting high-quality wines, Crab Farm stays true to its roots—a testament to tradition, resilience, and passion.
