What is the PAF?
The Programme Accreditation Framework (PAF) sets out what NZSTA expects of speech-language therapy training programmes in Aotearoa New Zealand, and how NZSTA accredits programmes and supports continuous improvement.
Why NZSTA has a framework like this
Because what students learn and experience during training becomes the foundation of the future workforce. The PAF helps strengthen:
- Public trust and professional credibility
- Consistent preparation for entry-to-practice
- High-quality practice education and placements
- Te Tiriti responsiveness and culturally safe practice

- Tuakiritanga (Identity): professional identity and responsibilities in Aotearoa, including Te Tiriti obligations.
- Te Haerenga (The Journey): how learners are supported to grow—wellbeing, reflection, safe learning environments.
- Pūkenga (Competence): the capabilities and competence graduates need for real-world practice, including placement learning and credible assessment.
