Social connection is fundamental to health and wellbeing, but for people with acquired communication disorders, maintaining friendships and social networks can be challenging.
This talk brings together current models of social health, the growing literature on friendship and social connection in aphasia and dementia, and findings from recent research to offer SLTs a richer framework for thinking about the social lives of their clients.
You'll also be invited to reflect on your own social health, including what the science tells us about how friendships form and how to tend to your own social network.
About the speaker: Annabel Grant (Tangata Tiriti, Pākehā) is a speech-language therapist with clinical experience in adult health, particularly in neurogenic communication disorders. Annabel has a longstanding interest in working with people with dementia and their whānau.
She has been part of the practice education team at Massey University since the early days of the programme, where she combines her clinical interests with educating the next generation of speech-language therapists.
