NZSTA shares SLT Ramadan Guide to support culturally safe practice
The New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association (NZSTA) is promoting an online SLT Ramadan Guide to help speech-language therapists, workplaces, and training providers support Muslim clients, whānau, students, and colleagues during Ramadan.
The guide brings together practical, SLT-relevant considerations for planning and delivering services during Ramadan, including culturally respectful conversations, appointment scheduling, and clinical considerations related to fatigue, hydration, voice, swallowing, and medication timing. It is designed to support safe, inclusive practice while recognising that Ramadan is observed in diverse ways, and that individual needs vary.
“Speech-language therapists work alongside communities with a wide range of cultural and faith practices,” says Co-President Katrina McGarr. “This resource is about supporting cultural safety and curiosity—so our members can plan well, communicate respectfully, and provide the best possible care during Ramadan.”
NZSTA encourages members and employers to share the guide across teams and to continue learning from service users and colleagues about what support is most helpful.
