"NZ Speech-language Therapists Advocate for Gaza Ceasefire"
25 June 2024
The peak professional association for speech-language therapists in Aotearoa New Zealand, the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association (NZSTA), calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire to end the escalating health crisis in Gaza.
Speech-language therapists are deeply concerned that the number of deaths and injuries of civilians, healthcare professionals and humanitarian workers continues to grow. They have dedicated their careers to upholding the fundamental human right of communication access for all people, regardless of circumstances and advocate for the right to life, health and dignity – including access to speech therapy services in Gaza.
"We call for immediate action to protect, promote, and respect the right to life, health, and dignity," said Emma Quigan, Co-president of NZSTA. "This includes an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the rehabilitation of Gaza, the release of all hostages, the immediate establishment of reliable entry points for relief supplies and humanitarian aid, and an enduring long-term peace solution."
NZSTA is using its platform to give voice to those whose ability to communicate is under threat.
