Selective Mutism Treatment for Speech Pathologists
The Selective Mutism Clinic in Sydney is offering a practical 6-hour webinar titled Selective Mutism Treatment for Speech Pathologists on Friday, 8th August 2025, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (AEST).
Children with Selective Mutism are often referred to Speech Pathologists because of difficulties with communication. However, as Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder (not a speech disorder), many Speech Pathologists are unsure whether to take the lead in treatment or focus only on co-occurring speech concerns while involving a Psychologist. This webinar is designed to give you the confidence, clarity and strategies needed to take a leading role in treatment – if you choose to – with great results.
Led by Elizabeth Woodcock, Clinical Psychologist and Director of the Selective Mutism Clinic, the session will cover a comprehensive treatment framework based on a 5-stage communication model, evidence-based approaches like ‘Sliding In’, and our three-pronged strategy for supporting children at home, in therapy, and at school.
What’s Covered:
- Understanding Selective Mutism and its underlying anxiety
- The 5-stage model of communication to guide treatment
- How to assess SM using interviews, observation, and teacher input
- Key communication strategies like 'Sliding In' and stepladders
- How to train teachers and support them to implement classroom-based interventions
- How to coach parents in communication practice at home and in the community
- Working with comorbidities like Autism and Language Disorders
- When and how to involve a Psychologist
- Practical classroom strategies to build confidence, generalise talking, and support school transitions
