Are you a speech-language therapist looking for a new challenge - one that blends clinical practice, leadership, and management with the chance to make a real difference?
The Stuttering Treatment and Research Trust (START) is a charitable trust that has been providing therapy and support to people of all ages who stutter for over 30 years. START is recognised across Aotearoa New Zealand for our expertise in stuttering therapy, our community focus, and our commitment to innovation and evidence-based practice.
We are seeking an executive director (and clinical leader*) to lead our well-established, purpose-driven organisation.
About the Role
A unique opportunity for a speech-language therapist to blend leadership, management, and clinical practice in a collaborative, values-driven team.
You’ll lead a small, skilled, and passionate team of clinicians and support staff dedicated to making a difference for people who stutter and their families and whānau.
You’ll guide START’s strategic and operational direction, inspire and foster strong relationships within the START community and a range of external stakeholders, and ensure the organisation’s ongoing sustainability and growth.
We welcome applicants at different stages of their leadership journey. Our current executive director and clinical leader has grown into the role over time, progressing from clinical practice to organisational leadership, and we’ll support your continued professional growth as well.
*Whether or not the clinical leader role is included in this position will depend on the appointee’s suitability for this aspect of the role.
START is a respected organisation with a strong foundation and excellent governance, where you’ll enjoy autonomy, collaboration, and a clear sense of purpose.
We’re seeking a speech-language therapist who brings:
- A genuine interest in, and empathy for, people who stutter - across all ages and backgrounds
- At least 4–5 years of clinical experience, ideally including work with people who stutter, or a strong desire to develop in this area
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to inspire, connect, and collaborate
- A commitment to community, partnership, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- An interest or experience in leadership and management, and a willingness to continue learning and developing in these areas
- Eligibility for membership with Te Kāhui Kaiwhakatikatika Reo Kōrero o Aotearoa (NZSTA) and commitment to professional standards and CPD
- A current, clean New Zealand driver’s license
Why Join START?
- A well-respected, innovative organisation with a strong clinical reputation and supportive culture
- An opportunity to influence and shape services that make a real difference in people’s lives
- A role offering autonomy and variety - blending clinical work, strategic leadership, and community engagement
- A chance to grow into leadership, supported by an experienced and collegial Board
If you’re a speech-language therapist ready to take the next step - to lead, to learn, and to make a difference in the lives of people who stutter and their whānau - we’d love to hear from you.
Salary range: $95,000 - $128,500 FTE (depending on experience)
